Barnes & Noble Posts Positive Third Quarter Earnings, Credits Nook For Gains

Barnes & Noble released their Fiscal 2011 third quarter results today, which were mostly positive. This comes on the heels of Borders bankruptcy filing last week.

New Study Says Lower Ebook Prices & Higher Unit Sales Are Coming

A new study from the Yankee Group, experts in global connectivity, says that ebook prices are expected to drop. Furthermore, unit sales of ebooks are going to rise dramatically.

E-book unit sales will skyrocket. By 2013, U.S. consumers will purchase 381 million e-books, roughly four times the amount they purchased in 2010.

Average selling prices of e-books will plummet. By 2013, the average e-book retail price will fall to $7, down from an average of more than $9 in 2009.

Unexpected Benefit of eReaders

Since becoming a father, my life has changed in a lot of ways. One of those bigger changes is that I have little free time now. I spend a lot of my time feeding and/or rocking my little bundle of joy to sleep. While this is part of the joy of being a new dad, it can also get real boring real fast.

That’s where my Sony eReader comes in. It’s perfect for those hours in a rocking chair because it only requires one free hand (or no hands, if I prop it up on a pillow). I can get a lot of reading done I otherwise wouldn’t do.

Another lifesaver has been my iPhone. I can easily check email, moderate blog comments, read the news, listen to music or any other varied things iPhone’s can do.

But reading on my eReader is probably the most enjoyable – it sure beats watching television.

Barnes & Noble’s Nook vs. the Sony Reader Pocket Edition

I recently got a chance to do a side-by-side comparison of the Nook and my Sony Reader. My main interest was in the speed and smoothness of the page turns.

My (un)scientific experiment showed that the Sony Reader is slightly faster than the Nook. However, the difference is so small that it would be a non-issue if I had to decide between the two.
