Scrivener Revisted: A Studio For Writers

Oct 21 2011

A few years ago I gave the writing software Scrivener a try. Back then I thought it was impressive but didn’t think it was for me. I said I preferred the simplicity of a bare bones word processor.

I gave Scrivener another shot several months ago and discovered this time I really liked it. Since then I’ve been working on a few writing projects using the software. The ability to organize everything from notes, drafts, research and the final product, all in one program is very convenient.

Scrivener really is a studio for writers. Like a recording studio, it lets you take bits and pieces of your work and mix them together in multiple ways. It also allows you to take the final “cut” and turn it into a finished product by letting you convert your document into ePub or Mobi. (Kindle) formats. Of course you can export your work in any format you want.

I’ve found the real power of Scrivener is that it is compatible with whatever your style of working is. If you prefer a carefully crafted outline. No problem. If you like to take scattered notes and ideas and then mix them into a final document. Child’s play. And if you want it to write your research paper two hours before it’s due. Find another program.

Another cool feature is the “snapshot.” If you’re going to make a big edit to your work, like delete an entire paragraph, you can take a snapshot of the text. Then, if you decide you liked that paragraph, you can access that snapshot with the push of a button, restoring your original work.

I don’t want to rehash every Scrivener feature, there are just too many of them. Check out Scrivener’s website, they have upgraded from 1.0 to 2.1. The program costs $45, but you can get a 30-day free trial with all the available features. And it’s 30-days of actual use, not 30 consecutive days. You can’t lose!
