J.K. Rowling Considering Big Announcement About Harry Potter Series

NOTE: Read the latest on JK Rowling & Harry Potter in my new post. And don’t forget to check out all the latest Ebook News.

For years JK Rowling has been avoiding ebooks like the plague, worried that an ebook version of her Harry Potter books will only encourage piracy. As I have written over and over again, she’s been making a huge mistake.

Rowling, her lawyer and literary agent have finally come to their collective senses and appear to be seriously considering the release of her Harry Potter series in ebook format.  A person close to Rowling says no definitive decision has been made.

What I find more interesting though is the predicted implications for the ebook industry as a whole if/when Rowling turns Harry Potter digital. It will also mean a very healthy payday for Rowling:

JK Rowling could rake in £100million if she agrees to release ebook versions of her best-selling Harry Potter books.

The author, who ruled out the electronic format for years, will net millions when she sells the rights to publish the iconic series for iPads and Kindles.

Yesterday, her agent hinted ebook versions of the seven Potter novels will get the green light.

And publishing industry experts said they will transform the electronic market and easily net the author £100million.

Additionally, some are predicting that the release of Harry Potter in ebook format would cause a skyrocket in Kindle, Nook and even iPad sales:

“Experts believe the move could revolutionise the world of electronic publishing, triggering rocketing sales of ebook readers such as the Kindle and the iPad.”

Professor Claire Squires, director of Stirling University’s centre for international publishing and communication, said: “The rights to the ebooks would be worth millions of pounds.

I’ve been a big critic of Rowling for not embracing ebooks sooner. She’s not only missing out on a huge revenue stream, she’s actually encouraging piracy. Hopefully she will do the right thing and give Harry Potter fans around the world what they want.
