Wikileaks Fights for a Free Press

Dec 05 2010

Wikileaks has been making major waves in several spheres of life: Online, world governments, law enforcement, activists and everyday citizens.

The controversy centers around the online whistleblower’s website that recently published thousands of diplomatic cables from US embassies around the world. Before that, Wikileaks published the Afghan War Diary and Iraq War Logs – each containing classified government and military documents.

I’m a staunch supporter of an open and free press that can operate without threats/retribution from any government. And with the internet, it is even more important for the press to be able to operate freely. Therefore, I support Wikileaks and their efforts.

What is more disturbing to me then the content of the documents posted on Wikileaks, is the massive effort to bring the site down and prevent people from reading the material. It’s also very troubling that Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange, has had threats on his life and has to go into hiding – just because of the information he’s made available.

In order to help keep the documents alive, I have downloaded the “insurance” file that Wikileaks released. This file has every document they’ve released to date. I’m going to keep it on a USB drive for safe keeping.

If you want to do the same, you can find the torrent here at Pirate Bay. Because the file is a torrent, you need to open it with a torrent client. I used uTorrent. It’s safe and easy.

Finally, if you just want to read the documents (some are really eye-opening), you need to go to a mirror site, since the main Wikileaks website appears to be under constant attack from hackers. The one I linked to has been pretty stable and has links to all the other mirror sites popping up.

I doubt Wikileaks will go away anytime soon. They have to many supporters and have spread themselves around the world. The information they provide is just too important to suppress.
