Cyber Monday Discounts – Don’t Miss Out!

Nov 30 2009

Black Friday is long gone and now Cyber Monday is here. With a slumping economy retailers are trying to squeeze as much business as they can during this holiday season, even if it means deeply discounting their products.

I’ve been scouring the web for the best deals around and here is what I found.

Barnes & Noble: Price war between Amazon, Wal-Mart and Target is “overblown”

Nov 29 2009

There’s been a lot of controversy over the price wars between Amazon, Wal-Mart and Target over their recently adopted practice of selling bestsellers at deeply discounted prices (less than $9.00 for some new releases). Steve Riggio, CEO of Barnes & Noble appears to be unconcerned.

Black Friday Link Love 11/27

Nov 27 2009

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  I spent some time with family, ate a lot and I’m enjoying some time off from work. These long weekends are great for catching up on some much needed sleep.

Today is Black Friday – when consumers all over the US go on a crazy shopping spree and retailers offer deep discounts on everything from clothing to electronics. Even if you’re not one who celebrates the holidays, it’s hard to ignore the steep discounts. For your convenience, I added a link to Amazon’s Black Friday deals page (an affiliate link, of course).

No matter what your plans are, have a safe and happy weekend!

Happy Thanksgiving

Nov 26 2009

I wanted to take a moment to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. I also wanted to thank everyone for visiting, reading and commenting on my little space on the internet. I am thankful for and appreciate every one of you. Keep those comments coming, they always make my day.

Originally, I wanted to write some grand post connecting literature to Thanksgiving, but didn’t get around to it. So I’m writing this little post. As they say, sometimes less is more.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Part 2: Ebook reader holiday roundup (7 items to consider when buying an e-reader)

Nov 25 2009

Ebook readers appear to be on the minds of a lot of people this holiday season. The Barnes & Noble Nook won’t be shipping until January 4 now because of unexpected demand. And Sony can’t guarantee shipment of their new Sony Reader Daily Edition for Christmas. If you’re going to buy an e-reader for yourself or someone else, you need to act fast.

The popularity of ebooks is definitely on the rise. There are a lot of newcomers to the world of ebooks and they are finding it a daunting task to choose a device that best fits their needs. I have been getting a lot of questions about which ebook reader is best. While I can’t speak for everyone, I can give some practical advice for those seeking to make ebooks a part of their daily lives.

Breathe life into your characters using action

Nov 19 2009

Action makes your characters come alive in your fiction. Think how boring it is to read boring descriptions and dry narratives without the character actually doing anything. When I find this in my own writing and have to go back and and put my characters into action.

This boils down to that old saying ‘show, don’t tell’ (I wrote about this earlier Stephen King offers a ‘show, don’t tell’ lesson in new novel). There are effective ways to do this, and when done right, your characters will jump off the page and be more realistic.

Nook vs. Kindle: Sharing ebooks with others

Nov 18 2009

One of the features touted by Barnes & Noble about their new Nook ebook reader is that users can share ebooks with others. If I have an ebook, for example, that I loved and told you that you have to read it, I could send you that ebook via my Nook to your Nook, computer or mobile device with the B&N ebook software installed. The catch is that you can only ‘keep’ my ebook for 14 days (starting when you open the ebook) and during that time, I can’t read the ebook.
