Spread the word about International Literacy Day

Sep 08 2009

Whether you know it or not, today is International Literacy Day to help promote literacy for people of all ages, nationalities,  ethnic backgrounds and so forth.  The day has a wide-reaching scope that includes helping people learn to read, give people opportunities to read (i.e. donate books to those who can’t afford them) and ensure every person has a proper education.

Here is what the UN website that promotes this day says:

Literacy is a cause for celebration since there are now close to four billion literate people in the world. However, literacy for all – children, youth and adults – is still an unaccomplished goal and an ever moving target. A combination of ambitious goals, insufficient and parallel efforts, inadequate resources and strategies, and continued underestimation of the magnitude and complexity of the task accounts for this unmet goal.

For a day that promotes such a broad goal, it can be overwhelming to try to think of ways to make a difference. I always like to think of the saying “Think globally, act locally” for this kind of cause. This means that if everyone did their part on a local level, it will have positive global effects.

There are a few easy ways to promote literacy:

- Make a donation to a literacy foundation.

- Donate books to your local library, school or find a book drive for the needy.

- If you have some spare time, volunteer to be a reading tutor at your local library or other literacy organization.

The list is by no means complete, but hopefully you get the idea. And the important point to remember is not to wait until International Literacy Day to take action, this should be year-round effort on everyone’s part.

What are you going to do, or what do you do, to promote literacy? Leave a comment below with your answer.
