Smashwords teams up with Barnes & Noble to give indie authors a boost

Aug 31 2009

This news has been floating around the internet for a couple days now, so it’s probably old news. But I thought it’s worth it for me to comment on because it involves ebooks, indie authors and the large corporation Barnes and Noble. Strange bedfellows? Possibly. Though not in a bad way.

Sony releases new ebook software, compatible with Mac, leaves out PRS-500 support

Aug 28 2009

Oh Sony, how can you break my heart? After all my excitement over your new and shiny ebook reading devices, you are now going to let me drown in a sea of obscurity only because I was an early adopter and took a chance when you first got into the ebook business. I didn’t think you’d forget about me, or at least, not this fast.

Friday Link Love 8/28

Aug 28 2009

Most of the excitement this week came from the announcement from Sony about their 3 new digital ebook readers, including one with wireless capabilities. I’ll also be looking forward to when Apple announces upgrades to their popular iPod Touch line in early September. I’m guessing at least more storage capacity, perhaps a camera, and even built-in GPS would be nice for the Touch.

Yeah, I’m definitely a geek when it comes to gadgets. If I do upgrade to a new Sony Reader, I’ll be sure to write a review here. That said, it’s Friday and for the past few days the Chicago area has been getting soaked by rain storms. I’m not complaining though because I love the rain and how it makes everything so fresh and clean. On the other hand, it would be nice to see the sun a little this weekend.

As always thanks for taking the time to read my little blog and have a happy and safe weekend!

Author sells self-published book one copy at a time

Aug 24 2009

Anyone who thinks a writer should take a passive role in marketing and promoting of his/her work to concentrate on writing needs to talk to self-published author Christopher Herz about the importance of self-promotion. Herz quit his day job in advertising to concentrate on selling his book The Last Block in Harlem to one customer at a time.

Active vs. Passive Voice in writing

Aug 24 2009

I’ll confess that I sometimes get tangled up in the ‘active vs. passive voice’ problem. That is to say, I start using the passive voice when I really mean to use the active. A large part of this stems from some slight confusion on my part about knowing the difference between the two. After doing some some hardcore research (i.e. Google), I found some simple explanations that have helped me, and I hope will help you as well.

Vampires, zombies and the faddish nature of literature

Aug 22 2009

When I first began studying literature in college, I thought of literature as something pure – far removed from the superficial world of pop culture. I had read a lot of popular fiction in my life, but all that went out the window when I began dissecting literature at the college level. Looking back now I realize that I was a tad bit too idealistic in my thinking and I now realize that yes, even literature is subject to the whims of pop culture.

Friday Link Love 8/21

Aug 21 2009

Another week is gone as we inch closer to the end of summer. I can’t believe how fast these last few months have gone. Before too long, we will be in the middle of the holidays (shudder). Let’s try not to think about that right now. It’s Friday and that’s all that matters.

Have a safe and happy weekend!

I love Google, I just don’t trust them

Aug 19 2009

I really do love Google. I use Gmail for my personal email. I have the Google app on my iPhone. I use Google to search for everything from strange diseases to tips on writing better dialogue. I even use Google to analyze the visitor stats for this blog. So I think it is safe to say that Google is a part of my everyday life.

But I still don’t trust them. Let me qualify that: I don’t trust Google with their plan to profit from millions of out-of-print by digitizing the world of literature.

Link Love Leftovers

Aug 17 2009

I haven’t written a Link Love Leftovers post in a while. For those of you who don’t know, Link Love Leftovers are just like my Friday Link Love posts. Only difference is, I use links that are ‘leftover’ from the Friday posts.

The links are still great, but for one reason or another, they didn’t make it on Friday (usually because I already had a link from a particular blog or on a particular topic). Some of these links go back to July so they might be a little dated, but valuable nevertheless.

Enjoy!
