New website featuring free ePub books now online!
Note: You can read more about the ePub format on my post ePub Format Explained.
I’m a big fan of the ePub ebook format because it’s free, open source, easy-to-use and is free of that evil DRM. So you can imagine I was pretty thrilled when I learned of a new website that gives away free ebook exclusively in the ePub format. I learned about the site from the good folks over at Teleread on this post New, free epub book site goes live.
You can check out the site for yourself at epubBooks.com. My first impressions of the site are very positive. It’s well-organized and easy to navigate with a simple layout. And aside from providing free ebooks, it also has a wealth of information about ereaders and other places where you can download ebooks. I think this site will go a long way in helping promote the ePub format as a standard for digital books.
The primary focus of this site is to provide EPUB formatted eBooks which will allow users of modern eBooks readers to have the best possible reading experience. As many of modern readers have quite small screens it is often the case that PDF and even many Plain Text files do not display well or are quite ugly to look at.
I’ll admit, though, that I was hoping for some sort of ePub conversion program for writers out there who want to distribute their work in this awesome format. Having such a feature on the epubBooks website would also open up the doors to reading contemporary works by today’s indie authors.
Of course, such sites already exist, such as Feedbooks and Smashwords. Maybe the creator of epubBooks don’t want to ‘reinvent the wheel’, which is certainly understandable. Although I’m always of the opinion that the more choices readers have regarding ebooks, the better. And given that the ebook market is just starting to really come alive, there’s always room for more websites to offer format conversion services to authors.
Nevertheless, I’m excited about epubBooks.com and will be adding it to my ‘ebooks’ bookmark folder. I look forward to seeing the site grow and offer an even wider selection.
