Author smackdown: Stephen King disses Stephenie Meyer
As popular as the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer is, apparently, Stephen King thinks (according to this article) her writing..well…stinks!
According to Stephen, "Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people… The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good."
I’ll admit, I haven’t read any books in the Twilight series. I’ve heard mixed reviews of them and have seen these books fly off the shelves at my local bookshop. Nor have I read any of the Harry Potter books, so I can’t speak from personal experience on this issue.
On the other hand, I have read a lot of Stephen King books in my life. I recently wrote a semi-review on the most recent King book I read.
I hope Stephenie Meyer responds, and if she does, I’ll certainly write about it here. Let the fighting begin!

Lol!!
Stephenie Meyer just got served by the King himself!
Stephen King is a great writer, not just in America but in the world. He’s a legend. More than half his books are classics and he’s sold big numbers too, so I doubt Twilight fangirls will be able to come up with some dumb excuse as to why he’s saying this about Meyer.
They can’t say he’s jealous, cos he ain’t, to be quite honest.
Stephenie Meyer can’t write. Simple. She never could. But she could learn. Unfortunately, after Twilight success and the way all these immature girls are licking her every orifice like she’s some kind of god, I think she probably thinks she’s really good and doesn’t need improvement.
I’m a fan of both the Harry Potter and the Twilight series. No, Stephenie Meyer is not as talented a writer as J.K. Rowling. Few writers can weave phrases like Rowling can; she’s a master at making her prose come alive in the reader’s head. However, Meyer IS a good young adult fiction writer. The entire series is addicting; when you finish one book, you can’t wait to read the next one.
“Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn.”
Wow, strong words for a guy who hasn’t written a worthwhile book in a few years!
To Susan:
Have you ever heard of ‘Salem’s lot? I suggest you go read it.
It’s a true vampire novel written by King himself in the 70’s. Or maybe not, seeing as that it might give you and the other fangirls nightmares.
I hope ‘It’ gets you while you sleep.
Love,
Skeletorrent
@keletorrent – yes, actually I have. I do enjoy King’s earlier works, and The Stand is one of my all-time favorite books. However, he hasn’t written anything really good since about 2000. Dreamcatcher was passable, Black House was meh, and The Cell was abysmal.
I actually haven’t read any of the Stephanie Meyer books, though they are on my list of stuff to read before I die.
Agree with akin (hilarious comment btw).
“The Stand” is also one of my all-time faves, but “The Long Walk” and “Desolation” got me more hooked than a smackhead in Pakistani poppy fields.
I started out reading Stephen King novels at age 8, loved them. But, really, writing about a girl having her period for the first time in the communal gym shower at high school & having her classmates throw tampons at her- come on. Now that’s some intelligent prose.
Yes Stephen King is amazing and so is J.K Rowling. Stephenie Meyer is a great writer as well. Say whatever you want, her storylines aren’t well written or whatever. But, her writing style is amazing and shes very descriptive. I have no idea why Stephen King said that, because it is not true.
i think that stephenie meyer is an amazing writer as is j.k rowling im a fan of both. but i think that stephen kings remarks are of jealousy.
thats my opinion and i dont care what anybody thinks about it. Stephenie is a good writer.yes, maybe she doesnt have as much expirience as stephen and rowling but she is not horrible at all its not like she cannot write because she certainly can. He shouldnt be talking anyway when is the last time he has published a good book? not recently. i dont think he has ever had a fan base half the size of meyers and he never will. he simply does not affect the people who reads his books as much as stephenie. He was wrong to say that. There is always room for improvement for stephenie im not saying she is a god or anything of the sort, but indeed she CAN write and she writes wonderfully she keeps me entertained with her books and thats all that matters:)
I agree.. Why would Stephen be jealous? He’s sold MORE books then Stephenie, Is better known + more popular, is a literary legend, and has earned critical acclaim and Numerous awards. Stephenie just CANT write. J.K.Rowling- now THATS a woman who can write! She’s innovative, fresh, unique, and an AMAZING writer. She has both Story-telling ability, and writing chops. Stephenie only WISHES she had J.K.Rowling’s talent!!!!
Stephen King is not only the far more talented writer, but absolutely correct. Stephie Meyer has no ability for character construction, plot creation, realism, setting, prose, tone, and her over all writing style is simplistic and uninventive.

Brad, the URL (on my name) links to a review I did on Twilight. Just read that to get an idea of Ms. Meyer’s writing!

Yes, Stephen King is totally jealous of the fact that Stephenie Meyer is regarded as a complete amateur in the literary community.
Honestly, if you were to actually think about what you are reading in Twilight, it’s actually all synonyms of the words gorgeous and cold strung together to describe an emotional teenage vampire. In fact, I think you can find a list of how many times she described Edward’s traits somewhere on live journal.
Don’t even get me started on the plot.
It happened in the last, 30, 40 pages of the book. That’s all I’m going to say.

You may notice on this post that only girls are defending Twilight and very poorly may I say
