Always backup your data – I’m learning the hard way!
The other night I was happily surfing the tubes, when my Mac Powerbook G4 started making funny clunking sounds. Before I could react, everything froze up on me and I had to shut the computer down. After waiting a few minutes, I tried turning it back on and to my horror, I could only get a blank blue screen and a funny whirring-clunk noise coming from the hard drive.
After doing some research (I still have my old Dell laptop, which still works fairly well) I found that the hard drive on my Mac is probably toast and will have to be replaced. Hopefully a new hard drive will do the trick.
The bad news is, I pretty much only had my documents and some other stuff backed up. But I backed those up using the Backup program for Mac, to my MobileMe account, and I don’t think I can recover it on a PC. That also means the more valuable data, like my iTunes, hasn’t been backed up in a while (probably not since I switched over to the Mac last spring).
The good news (if you want to call it that) is that I really haven’t been buying a lot of a lot of songs and/or tv shows and movies. So if I do lose anything it won’t be that much. Still, it’s a major pain in the you-know-what to try and figure out where everything is. Plus I have an iPod and an iPhone that will need to be re-synced and organize all my playlists again.
So my public service announcement for today is: Always backup your data and do it as much as possible because you never know when your hard drive will decide to go up in a puff of smoke!
