Children’s Author Beverly Cleary is 92
I would have posted this on Beverly Cleary’s actual birthday (April 12) had I read this post earlier. Despite my lateness in my birthday wishes, I still feel it is appropriate to pay homage to an author that got me hooked on reading at a very early age.
Who can forget the innocent adventures of Ramona Quimby or the more mature Henry Huggins and his dog, Ribsy? I remember these characters more vividly than anything I ever watched on television when I was a kid and I can’t help but think they played a big role in developing my love for literature.
Happy Birthday!
What books did you read as a kid and how did they influence you?
P.S. Leave a comment on this post (or any other post during April) and you can win a $30 Amazon gift card! Don’t be shy! Make sure you read my simple contest rules, and of course, have fun!

Holy smoke! Ramona is still the yardstick by which I measure all other kids books. To hear that she’s still alive — and hopefully doing well — is wonderful.
I LOVE her books! I named my dog Ribsy, and hope to one day visit the Beverly Cleary Garden in Portland. It’s nice to know there are others out there who fondly recall reading & cherishing those books.
Beverly Cleary’s books were some of my absolute favorites as a child. I read all of the Ramona books and was addicted to the Ramona TV series that I believe was on PBS. A Girl from Yamhill, her memoir, was also a favorite. I’m glad to hear that Ms. Cleary is still alive and doing well.
She is a fantastic author and I love her books!
I read a lot of books when I was a kid but the Roald Dahl books made a huge impact on me. They were just so memorable, well written and fun to read! They were the first books and he was the first author where I was like “Wow, reading is great!” I might just have to go borrow some from the library in the next few days, haha.
