So many books, so little time

Dec 17 2007

Right now there are so many books I want to read, but as the title states, there is so little time. Part of the problem is that many of the books I have my eye on are not just single, stand-alone books, rather they are part of a series.

For example, I’m currently reading The Reality Dysfunction by Peter F. Hamilton, which is the first book in The Night’s Dawn trilogy. Right now I’m pretty engrossed in it and can’t wait to start the next book.

Then, when I’m finished with that trilogy, I’ll be starting another one: the His Dark Materials Trilogy which contains The Golden Compass – a book stirring up controversy in many religious circles right now. And as I mentioned in an earlier post, it is this controversy which is fueling my desire to read these books.

The problem right now, however, is that I’m also reading the biography of one of my favorite philosophers, Martin Heidegger, called Between Good and Evil which is a very "dense" read – not something I read at night to relax.

On top of all those books is the large stack of daily blog posts I keep up with, magazine/newspaper articles and anything else that strikes my fancy. But all these take time. One of my big problems is that I’m not very good at prioritizing my recreational reading material (for example, it took me several months to read Jerry Garcia’s biography because I nickel and dimed my way through it).

If there were just a few more hours in a day, I’d be happy. The reality is that we are stuck with a 24-hour day so we have to learn to deal with it the best we can. Now, if only I could get paid to read all these books…
