Shake up your writing locations

Aug 03 2007

Do you only write in one place? Perhaps your writing area is a desk in a spare bedroom, or even the basement. If you’re lucky, you might have an entire room to yourself to indulge in your creative fantasies.

But while writers might feel secure and comfortable in their "usual" writing spot, it might also be stifling their creativity! Think about it: there’s nothing really new or fresh about your writing space. It’s the same old thing day after day.

Take yours truly, for example. I usually do my writing in my spare bedroom. But lately, I’ve been dragging my laptop around with me. A good spot, I’ve found, is on the couch in front of the television (note: writing in front of the television is not a good idea and I really discourage it). But sometimes I’ll even carry my laptop to the local coffee shop (ie. Starbucks) and get some work done there.

Another great spot is the bed. Now a lot of medical professionals will discourage doing any sort of work in the bed, because the bed is for sleeping, not for work. And if you begin to mix those up, you might find yourself with a bad case of insomnia (more time to write!). If I have the time and I’m not too tired when I get up, I might power up the laptop and do a little writing before starting my day.

Believe it or not, but writing in new locations is actually kind of exciting, and also very stimulating. A different atmosphere might just be that "spark" you need to finish that work of short fiction you’ve been struggling with, since December, and you can’t even remember the names of the main characters (yes, I’m talking about myself, if you must know).

The key to shaking up your writing location is to find what works good for you. Some people do really well in noisy bars with lots of talking and loud music. Others prefer the quiet solitude of the library. Everyone is different. So try out lots of different places and see what kind of results you get. Take a week and try a different location each day (you are writing every day, right?).

This is one of those things where there is no right or wrong answer. If writing while hanging upside down from a flagpole wearing nothing but a pink speedo is the only way you can finish that novel, then go for it!
