Man Booker Award Finalists Announced

Apr 13 2007

If there ever was a time when authors have to slug it out to be the undisputed king of literature, then now is that time.

The Man Booker International Award announced a shortlist of 15 writers yesterday. At stake: a 60,000 pound (that’s British currency, not weight) prize – or  about $119,148 in US dollars. That’s a good chunk of change, especially for a writer! Here’s a quick excerpt naming a few of the finalists:

From the US it takes Philip Roth and Don DeLillo; from Mexico, Carlos Fuentes, one of the trailblazers of the Latin American "boom" of the 1960s; from Canada, Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje and Alice Munro; from Nigeria, Chinua Achebe, the most translated African author in history; from Israel, Amos Oz; and from Britain, Doris Lessing and Ian McEwan.

It’s interesting to note that the finalists come from all around the world and not limited to one geographic location. According to the article from the Guardian Unlimited, the more geographically diverse the finalists are, the harder it is to predict who the winner will be.

The winner will be picked (and I assume announced) in June.
